Coaching Skills For Leaders FAQ
CS4L FAQ
Why should I take this course?
What is the intent of CS4L?
CS4L aims to radically transform leadership, through 1 or 2 key lasting behavioural shifts that decrease the amount of time spent on oversight and increase your team’s engagement, understanding, and ownership of their key responsibilities.
The emphasis is on equipping you with tools and insights that will establish impactful leadership behaviours, not for you to leave with lots of new knowledge. Knowledge is only useful when it translates into changed behaviour and, as people, we typically can only shift 1 or 2 behaviours at any time.
Our aim is for you to leave with new behaviours, and new ways of leading, that result in you having more time to focus on your responsibilities and as a byproduct, reduce your stress because of the confidence and communication upgrade this will lead to for you and your team.
What is the origin of CS4L?
Anita Bakker and Gil Davidson are pioneers in the coaching profession and have been influential in moving coaching from the fringe to mainstream adoption in their region since the early 2000s. A combination of their passion for the impact of leaders and their integration of insights from diverse respected Coaching Certifications powerfully underpins their design work.
This program is NOT designed for coaches, but to equip leaders with coaching skills in their leadership context. After years of coaching leaders, they identified key patterns that create bottlenecks leading to stress, inefficiencies, and a breakdown of trust within teams. They isolated simple shifts that have life-giving impact for both leaders and those they work with.
They also recognised that these shifts are easy to know, but not easy to implement. Effectively making the shifts first requires the internal practice of self-examination and the dismantling of beliefs and habits. This program creates those shifts.
Elements identified as core to successful outcomes are self-discovery, shared learning, and contextual application which takes time and require engagement.
Their rigor in avoiding the temptation to ‘educate’ or ‘tell’, meticulously curating every element with purpose and intent to ensure the greatest impact is what gives this program its power. Confident of the impact the program would have, they were surprised the first time they delivered it that the outcomes were even greater than their expectations.
Who should take this course?
Leaders who are :
- Serious about seeing a tangible change in your leadership
- Willing to go through the discomfort of positive change
- Committed to investing the time necessary to succeed in this program – both in attending weekly sessions and doing the prep work in between sessions
Who shouldn’t take this course?
If you are looking for a quick theoretical understanding of coaching we recommend the books; Co-active Coaching, Executive Coaching (O’Neill), or Coaching for performance, but not this course.
This is focused on practical adoption of coaching skills NOT pure theoretical understanding. The content provided is a skeleton on which to build your coaching muscle and healthy leadership body through an emphasis on interactive, experiential learning.
Where in your business will a coaching culture make a difference?
At an office level, you can expect, over time, to see greater engagement and vibrancy.
At individual team member level, not only does ownership increase, but because of that, excitement, initiative, innovation and trust increase as well. You will witness the productivity of your whole team increase without being at the expense of anybody’s wellbeing.
What was the learning and impact for past participants?
“My team wanted to come in and vent, instead, I got them to figure out a solution to their problem.
It’s been such fun to see my new direct report come alive. Seeing him think for himself, and start to make decisions by himself. You don’t have to sacrifice development and movement while developing your people.”
“Letting go a little more – trusting what my staff are able to achieve – letting go so they can achieve more and I can do more”
“What shifted for me is that when I now allow my direct report to lead our one-on-one meetings, I’ve handed ownership to her with my role being to listen and facilitate.
It’s given her more confidence to put anything on the agenda – turning the meetings into a conversation with shared accountability”
“I have let go of the idea that a good leader shouldn’t be vulnerable, do it with a smile on my face, even when I’m drowning. I’m now Honest when I need help.”

What is expected of me in CS4L?
The success of CS4L is dependent on participants’ engagement. If you commit to this program you are committing to being prepared to fully engage in every session. If you are not fully engaged it will not only rob you of the experience but will also impact the rest of the group given the interactive nature of the program.
What might get in the way of my success in CS4L?
“Knowingness”! If you are saying to yourself, “I already know this”, it’s a red flag.
This program is not about knowledge of best leadership practices or the theory of coaching, but rather the shifting of beliefs and behaviours as a result of understanding the principles and putting them into action…even in difficult situations.
Initially it may feel slow and difficult as you do the personal work to shift into a coaching mindset, but it will be worth it in the long run.
What is my weekly time commitment?
You will have individual and group fieldwork. To view a detailed weekly breakdown you can view the syllabus.
Additionally, we will be sending out a reminder email each week containing the tasks to be completed before the next session to make it easier for you to stay on track.
